I see this as a growing trend across heavily trafficked public spaces. We will continue to see companies (Google just announced an initiative to provide free Wi-Fi in 47 airports during the holiday season) foot the bill so that consumers can access Wi-Fi free of charge in entertainment venues, large-scale public spaces, metropolitan parks, etc.
In the case of Times Square, the mecca of the digital out-of-home world, Yahoo is providing free Wi-Fi to the landmark's 500,000 daily visitors. With the increased penetration of smartphones and the rising number of consumers who have some form of connected device in tow, Yahoo is providing a valuable service that reinforces its brand, increases awareness, and drives traffic to Yahoo.com.
